Tom Rewatches Dexter Season 1 Episode 5 "Love American Style"
So love is in the air in this episode, or not really. I do enjoy that this episode is about Deb and Dexter looking for love and trying to mantain it, and both of them have some success.
Let's start with Dexter who struggles to find some way to become more intimate with Rita who seems to be expecting something since she gave him a blow job. Who'd have thought? After some not at all helpful advice from Batista who Dexter discovers is separated from his wife, Dexter tries to return the favor so to speak while watching Terms for Endearment. It doesn't go well and Dexter continues to have to try to find a way to please her, and after a side plot that involves illegal immigration he ends up finding his answer from a pair of lovebirds right before he kills them. He has to try and find a common dream he shares with Rita, and it turns out that this dream is to "have a normal life."
Meanwhile even though Deb doesn't know it, she's closing in on the Ice Truck Killer....
So spoilers!
That's right, its time to talke about Rudy, who we will find out is Dexter's brother, and is actually the Ice Truck Killer. But for now all we know is that he's doing the prosthetics for Tucci, which is ironic considering that Rudy was the one to cut off his limbs in the first place. Rewatching this I'm struck by how horrific it is that he continues to keep an eye on Tucci, and how disturbing it is that he goes after Deb. Tucci's description of the Ice Truck Killer as always whispering and unwrapping those coughdrops creep me out majorly. And the fucking rats! I have to completely agree with Masuka on this one. Those rats make the whole ordeal so much worse, which is impressive considering Tucci was already forced to live through his limbs slowly being chopped off. At least Deb got him a whore for his troubles!
Anyways, Rudy is a psychopath, although we don't get any of that here. They really could have gone anywhere with Rudy, based solely on this first episode, he seems like a charming guy who would be perfect for Deb, which fits with the theme of the episode. But oh boy is this going to cause problems.
Finally I have to ask whether it was too soon in the series as a whole to introduce Dexter's brother. I know this is based on the books a lot, but I have to wonder if maybe they should have introduced Rudy in this season and then had the Ice Truck Killer show up in a later one. I guess that thinking is based on the notion of drawing out the series, while I feel like the writers are more focused on making each season the best it can be. Still I wonder.
MVP: Teen Dexter. I don't usually like the flashbacks particularily, but when Teen Dexter asks Harry whether he'll ever really feel what its like to be in love, I almost teared up. And I also yellout out "Yes with Rita!"
Needs Improvement: N/A
Kill Count: Dexter kills the Coyote couple.
Rating: 7 out of 10.
Good episode. I enjoyed the dealing with the romantic relationships of the characters, but I felt like the whole immigration side plot was somewhat forced. I guess in Miami they were going to hit this subject eventually, but it just wasn't my favorite.
