Tom Reviews Lost: Season 2 Episode 6 "Abandoned"
This episode review is dedicated to Shannon who is seemingly killed at the end of this episode. I don't know how fans viewed Shannon's character when Lost first aired, but I loved her. She provided a strong apathetic viewpoint to most of Season 1, and then she lost Boone and I felt her incredible loss. I predicted that she would die this season, but I did not expect it to happen like this.
So let's begin this episode by talking about Sayid and Shannon having sex. First off, way to go Sayid! And not to be sexist, way to go Shannon! I'm not sure if they're the first to have sex on the Island? Were Jin and Sun banging before they sort of split up near the end of the season? Kate hasn't put out despite having chemistry with everyone. I'm sorry, that sounds crass. Kate hasn't made love with any of the men she has a deep emotional connection to.
Okay, joking aside, that gun that gets in the way is foreshadowing now that I think about it. At the time, I just thought it was funny that she found it.
By the way, how does everyone else react to Shannon and Sayid sleeping together? Are they jealous? Do they resent their love and happiness? That would have been interesting to see.
So, I believe that Shannon saw Walt, but what does that mean? Was that all an elaborate plan by the Others to kill Shannon? Does it somehow involve Vincent the Dog? What is going on?
Oh Charlie. I am going to hate you by the end of the Season, aren't I? Don't yell at Claire. Unlike Shannon and Sayid, you two aren't an official couple yet. You have no right to do that.
I like that Claire is just realizing now that she's suddenly pseudo married Charlie. I totally get that she's sort of confused by this, and isn't sure she wants to be with him. Even though I want them to end up together, she has every reason to be suspicious of him. I mean, he is a heroin addict, and he is on the verge of falling off the wagon. Or, maybe he already has.
I enjoyed the scene where Locke helps Claire with the baby. I get the impression that Aaron is sort of going to be raised by the entire community. I'm also really glad that Claire told Locke about Charlie having the Virgin Mary statue. Hopefully he can find a way to stop Charlie from using again.
Charlie, don't you dare question Claire's ability to be a responsible parent! You're a fucking heroin addict!
I wish Shannon had never gone into that damn jungle.
Okay, so I think the writers made a conscious choice to make Shannon more likable in her flashback in this episode. I didn't particularly need it, but it was nice to see her relationship with her step mom and Boone prior to the last flashback of them, where all we saw was the reasons behind Boone resenting Shannon. Instead, in this episode's series of flashbacks we get to see how Boone's mother totally did screw over Shannon, and how even though he clearly cared for her, she wasn't able to accept his help. And now he's dead, just like her father, and Shannon is worried about Sayid abandoning her.
And as Shannon opens up to Sayid, I think you see Sayid fall in love with her.
"I will never leave you."
"I love you."
And then it all goes to shit.
So the other thing I want to talk about this episode is the plot with the Tail Siders. I don't really like Anna Lucia. Well, actually let me amend that. I DID NOT LIKE her prior to her killing Shannon. Now I HATE her. But seriously, she is sort of a bitch to Sawyer in this episode, and I just don't get it.
Sawyer pulled out a bullet with his bare hands! How is everyone not just in awe of him?
I love the relationship between the three men; Michael, Jin, and Sawyer. They all have hated each other at one point, but it's clear that they all care so much for each other. I don't care what they say; these three are best friends!
I was really worried that Sawyer might die in this episode. I know that is kind of an absurd thing to be worried about, because obviously he has to survive to hook up with Kate, but I got worried just the same. Good job writers! You made me believe Sawyer could die. You made me relieved that he didn't.
Then you killed my hopes and dreams.
Rating: 10 out of 10 graves.
I could take points off for parts of this episode that I didn't like as much, but I refuse to give this episode anything less than a perfect score. The writers made Shannon die a pointless death, but I won't let her death be in vain!
