Five Drinks Into Off the Air TV: Lost Episode 26 (I)

Tom Reviews Lost: Season 2 Episode 2 "Adrift"

I'm not keeping track of Days anymore, but Locke said the plane crashed 44 days ago. I was about a week off when I was keeping track. We also know 22 out of 46 people alive on the Island. Then of course there's a whole bunch of Others that I assume I'll have to keep track of, so I might give up on this soon. Anyways, this was a Michael episode!

First off, I want to talk about this episode rewinding a little to when Locke entered the Hatch. He saw much of the same stuff that Jack did last episode, although we learned that he was the one to take off his shoes, and we got the same scenes from last episode, but with a different perspective. I really really enjoyed this, and I don't necessarily know why. It just gave this episode a different feeling, and added more tension. It also put us into a claustrophobic space which really worked for the episode. Both groups of characters in this episode are trapped, one group in the claustrophobic Bunker (I'm calling it that for now) and the other out in the wide open sea. That combined with the density of the plot, where a lot happens in a very short amount of time made this a very rich episode, and I enjoyed watching it.

So focusing on the Bunker part of the story, it was cool to see that Kate was still alive, and that she was willing to fight for survival. She looked pretty cool managing to get free and then climb around in the air vent. She also looked pretty hot, as we could see quite a bit of her boobs. Anyways, it made the gun scene even more tense, as she almost got hit by the random shot. Wouldn't that have been a bold twist. Am I going to have to rewatch the last episode to see if I can hear Kate yelling for Jack? The other  nice thing to see was that Kate to see Jack yell for her. I hope she realizes that this means he likes her. He really really likes her. Much more than he likes Locke.

"What did one snowman say to the other snowman?" Am I hearing that right? Was that really the code question.

I like that it was clear that Locke WANTED to be "him," but he wasn't. I predict that whatever destiny Locke thinks he has will actually be intended for Jack.

So the second part of the episode to talk about is Michael's flashback. (I'm saving my favorite part for last.) I loved how in the beginning of the episode he couldn't stop shouting for his son, and in the flashback we see that he did NOT have an easy time letting Susan take Walt from him. He fought for his son, despite not having the money to do so. Unlike Susan, I thought he got crushed in that deposition with her lawyers. Maybe they were being mean to him, because they knew their case was weak? It just seemed like they were trying to crush his spirit so that he would give up. My heart broke a little for him when he realized that it really was what was best for Walt.

I do like that Susan came to Michael to reason with him though. These two people loved each other once, and it seemed to me like she still supported him. She didn't take Walt away to hurt him; she truly thought she was doing the best thing. I feel bad that she died, and Bryan proved that she was wrong about him being worthy of being Walt's father.

My favorite part of this episode by far was Michael and Sawyer struggling to survive after Walt's abduction. The first scene is total chaos, and Sawyer is left with a bullet wound and nothing to do but try and save himself  and anyone else he can find. That turns out to be Michael, and the result is a plot that really builds an interesting bond between these two characters that we didn't really get to see in Season 1.

Sawyer earned major man points from me in this episode. With a bullet wound, he managed to get both himself and Michael onto the bare scraps of the raft that they could find. He then proceeded to save Michael's life, swim over to another piece of the raft, remove the bullet from his wound with just his bare hands, swim over and pull himself up onto the pontoon, and just generally be a man.

Was that a real shark, or some sort of mystical shark?

I did not much care for Michael treating Sawyer badly in this episode, considering how cool I thought Sawyer was being, but it did lead to some good drama. These two men had nothing but each other, and all they can do is try and blame each other for the crap they're dealing with. Michael points to Sawyer wanting to use the flare, while Sawyer says the Others (they had to be the Others, because they launched from the Island) were after Walt. They then proceeded to bicker and destroy the last thing in the world they have left; their raft. It was so intense, and painful, and fun to watch. I honestly think I could have watched an entire season of these two men struggling to stay alive with only a few pieces of bamboo to support them.

Watching Michael break down because he believed that Walt's abduction was his fault was also very emotional, and I cried with him.

But wait? Where's Jin? Oh there he is? Wait. Why is he tied up? What's he yelling? The Others? THE OTHERS!!!

Cliffhanger.

Rating: 9.5 out of 10 sharks!

Sharks scare the hell out of me by the way. That made this episode even more intense. I don't necessarily know why I'm not giving this episode a perfect 10. I guess I would have liked to have Michael acknowledge how much of a bad ass Sawyer is. That is all. Now, is next episode going to show us what happened when Kate first entered the Bunker? Let's find out!
