Tom Reviews Lost: Season 2 Episode 1 "Man of Science, Man of Faith"
With the addition of Desmond we now know 22 out of 46 survivors on the Island. (I'm still counting Vincent.) I guess four of those don't really count, since Walt, Jin, Sawyer, and Michael are still out at sea. Or are they?
We didn't see any of what had happened to those on the Raft, but I'm okay with that, since I think next week will spend more time with them. I don't want to spoil anything, but the next episode is called "adrift." So instead this episode focuses on those still on the Island, particularly Jack.
So at the bottom of the Hatch was a man named Desmond. When I first saw that there was a man down there, I was pretty much "oh shit." I also wondered if that whole thing was supposed to be a bomb shelter, and why it was built on this mysterious Island. Now, I'm mostly wondering who the hell Desmond is, and rethinking that whole scene he had with Jack in the Flashback.
So I was actually interested in Jack's flashback, mostly because the way he interacted with Sarah in this episode was not really how she described in the previous flashback. I expected Jack to be reassuring. Instead Jack is shown to have really awful bedside manner, a fact noted in the present by Hurley.
By the way, I love that the only part of Hurley's backstory Jack took note of was the fact that Hurley was once in a mental institution. Ironically it was also the part I focused on, since I hadn't picked up on it during his flashback, although in retrospect it was basically stated. I guess I was distracted by all the rap music in that episode. Any at all was a surprise.
Speaking of music. Make Your Own Kind of Music is a really fun song, and it has no place in this depressing show. I love it. It's such a jarring contrast to whatever situation is happening. I'm listening to it on repeat as I write this article. I am worried by all the Lost spoilery videos that are linked to this youtube version of it though. I'm going to have to be careful about this. I already get in trouble searching for those pictures. Keeping spoilerfree is hard!
Wait, so Shannon thought she saw Walt in the jungle? When was that? Did I miss that? I saw her going in to look for Vincent the Dog, but I didn't see Walt in there. I just heard the whispers of the Others.
I like Charlie being a dick and saying the Others don't exist.
Jack telling everyone they were going to be okay was a nice moment of leadership, that was immediately undercut by Locke just ignoring him.
Locke goes off to explore the Hatch, because he's obsessed with it. Now, does Kate join him because she's really worried about him? I personally think she was just curious as well. Her asking what she should say to Locke if she needs to stop lead to the funniest moment of the episode.
"Stop." simple enough.
Seeing Kate count when she got frightened reminded me of why I shipped Jack and Kate in the first place. He inspires her to be a braver more confident person. I love that.
I also loved seeing Jack just abandon the camp and chase after Kate. He may not admit it; but he's got serious feelings for her.
Back to the flashback,we learn that Sarah had a fiance, although it's clear that he's not sticking around. In just a short amount of time Jack grows to really care about Sarah, and now I'm really curious to see how their relationship ends. I don't think it'll end well considering that Jack still doesn't believe in miracles, even after seeing one for himself at the end of the episode. He seemed to truly believe after that scene, and he broke down into tears showing how much it had affected him. That was a powerful scene; but I have a feeling that something terrible happens after that.
Alright. Who the hell is Desmond? Is he the Hatch of this season? Was he really just some random runner Jack met while he was running bleachers? Is he some sort of Angel? Is it all connected?
"Lift it up."
Was that really just Desmond talking about Jack's ankle, or was that somehow a reference to Sarah. Lift up the sheet and see her toes move maybe?
Jack jumps into the Hatch, and discovers a few things. A lot of light. Shoes left on the ground. Desmond's? A weird painting which I'm sure has some significance. I've seen Battlestar Galactica! Some sort of magnetic field that draws in Jack's key. A computer. Oh and Desmond's pointing a gun to to Locke's head.
Cliffhanger.
On a side note, I thought that this episode title would spend more time on the relationship between Jack and Locke, based on the quote used in the season finale I believe. Instead, I think Jack was BOTH the man of science and the man of faith in this episode, as he was converted by the miracle at the end.
Rating: 8.5 out of 10 miracles.
A great start to the season. I think I preferred the season one pilot, but it's hard to compare the two. Lost was all so new back then. I feel like the writers are really setting Jack up to go to a darker place this season, and I'm looking forward to it. By the end of the season, I hope to discover that he is just as broken and damaged as Sawyer and Kate. Of course as the lead of the show, the writers can only break him so much. He still has to be able to carry the show after all! Anyways, I can't wait to continue to watch the second season!
